Quarterly General Meeting

Presenter: Donna Rockwell MS, RN, FCN, Donna’s nursing career has been a combination of clinical, educational and administrative roles in a variety of settings. After retirement and the death of her husband. she searched for ways to serve her community as an FCN. She was called to enter pet therapy with her dog Dexter after she witnessed the loving effect he had on her husband and the way he has helped her through her grief process. Through HALO (Human Animal Link Organization) she has had the privilege of combining Faith Community Nursing with pet therapy.

Purpose

To provide Faith Community Nurses with information on pet therapy for FCNs.

Learning Objectives

After attending the presentation, attendees will be able to

1.      Examine the historical human-animal relationship

2.      Summarize biophysical and hormonal effects of human-animal interactions

3.      Compare and contrast current pet therapy methods

4.      Outline certification processes for pet therapy methods

5.      Explore implementing pet therapy in practice

6.      Describe experiences with the human-animal bond

Quarterly General Meeting

𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫: Jeanne Draughon, RN, BSN, FCN has been a parish nurse at Church of St. Benedict for the past 24 years. She has facilitated a grief support group for the past 21 years and pblished a grief newsletter for 20 years, reaching a month readership of 200. She provides education and spirtiual supports to her congregants. She has recently started a mental health ministry at the parish. Jeanne is a contributor to𝘈𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘶𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘍𝘶𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭, 𝘞𝘪𝘴𝘥𝘰𝘮 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘰𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘗𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘎𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘵𝘩, and an article in the Grief Digest Magazine.

FCNA Foundations Course

Participation is limited to 12 attendees. Attendance at all six sessions is required to receive a certificate of completion.

Session 1: Wednesday, October 23th - Friday, October 25th, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Session 2: Wednesday, November 6th - Friday, November 8th, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

This multi-denominational Faith Community Nursing Foundations Course offers experienced registered nurses an educational and spiritual program based on the core curriculum developed by the International Parish Nurse Resource Center, and is organized to assist members of all faith communities to grow toward holistic health from a global perspective. This course enables registered nurse participants to:

  • Gain an understanding of the theoretical knowledge necessary to begin in practice as a Faith Community Nurse.

  • Discuss the various roles of the Faith Community Nurse in Practice.

  • Examine and nurture personal spiritual development.

  • Identify a network of continuing education and support.

Non-nurses interested in promoting health ministry within their faith community may enroll in the program and will receive a pin entitled “Health Minister” upon completion of the program.

The Faith Community Nursing Program works in collaboration with the Faith Community Nurses Association of Oklahoma to share practice ideas in faith communities and to nurture professional spiritual development.
